Our Story

The Benjamin Oluwakayode Osuntokun Trust was established in 1996 as a legacy of and memorial to Kayode Osuntokun, a towering figure in the global neuroscientific community, who died prematurely on 22 September 1995. He made specific provision in his last will and testament for funds to be set aside from his estate for the endowment of a professorial chair in the neurosciences in the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan which was his alma mater and the institution at which he spent most of his career as a researcher, clinician administrator and medical educationist.

Based on this bequest, and knowing of his passion to benefit as many people as possible, including his earlier alma mater, Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti, Kayode’s widow, Professor Olabopo Osuntokun, herself a professor of ophthalmology at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, set about establishing a memorial trust which would ensure that Kayode’s legacy of excellence in the study and practice of medicine would endure for future generations.

The aims of the Benjamin Oluwakayode Osuntokun Trust, as set out in its founding document, are:

To advance the frontiers of knowledge in the medical sciences in Nigeria
To promote and award medical fellowships and grants in the neurosciences
To endow a Benjamin Oluwakayode and Olabopo Osuntokun Chair in the area of the neurosciences at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan
To award prizes to the deserving final year graduates of medicine and designated Nigerian Medical Schools to be called Benjamin Oluwakayode Osuntokun Prize in Medicine
To award the Benjamin Oluwakayode Osuntokun Prize to the best final year student in the sciences at Christ School Ado Ekiti every year in perpetuity
To obtain and receive monies and funds by way of subscriptions, contributions, donations, legacies, endowments, loans, grants or any other lawful method and accept and receive gifts or property of any description whether subject to any special trust or not
